Abstract
Oxford Archaeology South (OAS), was commissioned to undertake an
archaeological investigation of land at North Field, Filton Airfield, South
Gloucestershire (NGR: ST 598 806 centred) on behalf of Bovis Homes Ltd.
During a large-scale trench evaluation of the site in 2008 it was not possible to
excavate all of the proposed evaluation trenches. Some areas were subsequently
monitored by watching brief, in these works an additional nine trenches were excavated. Two of the trenches contained archaeological features: a Medieval ditch and an undated, ditch.
In addition a strip, map and sample exercise was carried out around a group of limestone walls identified in the earlier trenching within the eastern part of the site.
The limestone wall foundations were found to be elements of two buildings, that formed part of Sparrowbill Farm. These were found to be of a single phase and are likely to date from the early 19th century.
