Abstract
Baxter Homes made a planning application to Blackpool Borough Council to develop the site of the former Mazda Garage at 66-70 Newton Drive, Blackppol. As part of the planning procedure, BBC consulted Lancashire County Archaeology Service, which recommended that the development should be accompanied by an appropriate programme of archaeological works. In life of the site's proximity to a former medieval manor and post-medieval hall, LCAS recommended that a watching brief should be maintained during both the final demolition and groundwork phases of the development, in order to identify and investigate significant archaeological deposits. In addition, one of the components of the garage was considered to be of historical interest. LCAS requested that it should be the subject of a building investigation to English Heritage (2206) Level II standard. Baxter Homes subsequently commissioned OA North to undertake the programme of archaeological works.
