Abstract
In September 2004 Oxford archaeology carried out a field evaluation at Monkton Heathfield, Taunton, Somerset (NGR ST 25902660) on behalf of John Samuels Archaeological Consutants. A geophysical survey had been carried out previously which led to the locating of the evaluation trenches. Further trenches covered the area outside the geophysical survey.
Areas 1,2 &3 around Aginghill Farm were largely devoid of archaeology save some Post-Medieval field boundaries. Further post-medieval field boundaroes were located in area 4 7 6. There was ditch evidence and pottery dating for some Iron Age activity in Area 4.
More significant prehistoric activity ranging from Neolithic to Iron Age was detected in ditches found in areas 5 & 7. A possible Roman enclosure & occupation area was found in Area 5.
