Abstract
Oxford Archaeology (OA) carried out a field evaluation at 90-93 Broad Street, Reading, Berkshire (NGR SU 7142 7342), on behalf of John Mowlem and Company PLC. The evaluation revealed the remains of walls, floors and basements belonging to 19th century properties that would have fronted Chain Street, to the east of the site. A flint wall had been incorporated into one of the properties, but had been originally been part of an earlier structure, as it was abutted by a rammed chalk floor which was seen to be significantly earlier than one of the 19th century walls. Below this floor were dumped layers overlying medieval pits and ditches.
