Abstract
In June and September 2002 OA carried out a field evaluation on land adjoining the M4 Junction 13 near Chieveley, West Berkshire. The evaluation revealed significant evidence of archaeological features and deposit representing occupation and settlement at the northern extent of the proposal area dating from the Prehistoric to the early Roman period.
Limited artefactual material including flint work and pottery was further recovered from topsoil contexts and the relatively thick layer of colluvium present across much of the southern extent of the site. The exact provenance of the recovered artefacts in the southern areas of the site are unknown though it is suggested that they are likely to reflect occupation activity on the higher ground beyond the limit of the proposal area.
