Abstract
An archaeological assessment was undertaken in September 1991 to evaluate the archaeological potential of the Orchard, Stretham Rectory, Stretham. This was in response to proposals for developing the land. Seven trial trenches were opened and a complex of Early medieval ditches and associated features were found in the central area of the Orchard. There were also indications of earlier ditches to the southern edge of the Orchard. It was concluded that these ditches, slots and post holes probably related to the Early medieval domestic complex found in an 1990 excavation in the adjoining Rectory Garden. It was recommended that disturbance of the ground was limited to a depth of 0.40m, with deeper cuts being preceded by area excavation.
