Abstract
In May 1996 the Archaeological Field Unit (AFU) of Cambridgeshire County Council carried out an archaeological evaluation at Feoffees Primary School, Little Downham, Cambridgeshire (TL 5249/8419). The work was funded by Cambridgeshire County Council Property Management Services and undertaken in accordance with a brief designed by the County Archaeology Office.
The site lies outside the medieval village core of Little Downham but still upon the ridge of sand and gravel on which the village is located. Saxon, Roman and prehistoric finds are known from the vicinity, the most important of which is a series of Bronze Age burials. However, the most significant remains from the evaluation trenches comprised a scatter of Late Mesolithic flints from a buried (but heavily disturbed) land surface beneath the modern plougsoil, perhaps associated with a number of small cut features of doubtful origin. A few sherds of later pre-historic, Roman and medieval pottery also derived from this level.
In addition, the trenches revealed garden features probably associated with a property know to exist on the site from the early 19th until the mid 20th century.
