Abstract
In January 2010 Oxford Archaeology (OA) carried out an archaeological watching brief at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, High Street,
Oxford (NGR: SP 5158 0627). The work was commissioned by Confluence PCM in advance of the installation of two new toilets inside the church, which required access to the external drain beneath St Mary’s Passage to the west of
the church. The watching brief revealed three medieval pits, thought to be for gravel extraction associated with the construction of the church. All three pits
contained human remains, none of which were articulated. No evidence for earlier phases of the church or lane surfaces were encountered
