Abstract
St Theodore’s RC Boys’ High School, Ormerod Road, Burnley, Lancashire, is due to be replaced by Blessed Trinity College as part of Phase 3 of the Building Schools for the Future (BSF). The proposed development area comprises approximately 8.2 hectares of land to the south of Ormerod Road, which forms the current boundary of St Theodore’s RC Boys’ High School. The project is at the pre-planning stage and a
Heritage Statement is therefore necessary to inform the planning process. Bovis Lend Lease commissioned Oxford Archaeology North (OA North) to undertake a deskbased
assessment which will form part of the Heritage Statement. The work was undertaken in July and August 2008.
The desk-based assessment comprised a search of both published and unpublished records held by the Lancashire Historic Environment Record (HER) in Preston, the County Record Office in Preston, the local history section of Burnley Central Library, and the archives and library held at OA North. In addition to this, a site visit was carried out on the site of the proposed development, in order to relate the landscape and surroundings to the results of the desk-based assessment.
