Abstract
In July 2007, Oxford Archaeology North (OA North) carried out an archaeological desk-based assessment of a site in Wigan on behalf of Wigan Metropolitan Borough
Council (WMBC). The assessment was required to inform a proposed scheme of development of land bounded by Millgate, Rodney Street, Library Street and the Wiend, in the centre of Wigan, Greater Manchester (centred at NGR SD 58356
05569). The desk-based assessment concluded that despite extensive redevelopment of Millgate in recent centuries there remained a high potential for survival of buried
remains in parts of the proposed development area.
In order to corroborate this conclusion, and further inform the development proposals, WMBC invited OA North to submit a costed project design to undertake a programme
of archaeological evaluation. This evaluation was designed to assess the presence or absence of any buried archaeological remains, and establish their character, extent, date, and significance. Following the approval and acceptance of the project design, OA North was commissioned by WMBC to undertake the evaluation, which was carried out in August 2007.
