Abstract

Following a proposal to create a new water pipeline between Millbrook Boreholes (SJ 94984 75783) and Lamaload Reservoir (SJ 97365 75295) a programme of archaeological work was undertaken on behalf of United Utilities. The work comprised
topographic survey and archaeological evaluation, which was completed within two weeks during March 2006. The programme of archaeological works was recommended following the results of a desk-based assessment, walkover survey and watching brief (OA North 2005).
Nine sites were subject to topographic survey: Site 21 comprised the extant remains of relict field walls/banks associated with Whiteside Farm (Site 20); and the farm ruins
were also surveyed. Sites 45 and 76 comprised a linear field bank and sunken access tracks in the field between Snipe House and Danebent Farm. Sites 77-79 comprised a
fragmentary boundary bank in the middle of two small areas of quarrying located on the eastern side of Snipe House. Site 26 was a shallow, sunken, curvilinear trackway
and bank, which had been truncated by the modern access road. Site 81 comprised a revetted and cobbled trackway, which ran between Whiteside Farm and High and Low
Hooleyhey Farms. The Whiteside farmstead (Site 20) was an addition to the programme and was included as it related to the other features. Upon further detailed examination trackway 28 was found to be modern in origin and thus not surveyed.
