Abstract
During May and June 2003, Oxford Archaeology North (OA North) undertook an archaeological desk-based assessment and visual inspection survey of Westwood Park, Wigan (centred SD 5844 0447), on behalf of Hyder Consulting. The assessment
was required to inform the planning process in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the area for commercial and industrial use.
The desk-based assessment examined the relevant sources, both primary and secondary, including maps, plans and journals, as well as referring to the Greater Manchester Sites and Monuments Record (SMR). A total of 18 sites of archaeological interest was identified, seven of which were already recorded on the SMR. Many of these sites related to Westwood Park, and included buildings, gardens, associated
farmsteads, cottages, a possible coal extraction site, a road and a railway. The visual inspection identified a further two sites of potential archaeological interest, both of which were small post-medieval industrial sites.
