Abstract
A programme of archaeological investigation was undertaken by Oxford Archaeology North (OA North) in September 2002 of an area to the south of Braystones, near Lantern Tarn Moss at Beckermet, Cumbria (NGR NY 0066 0605) on behalf of United Utilities plc in advance of construction of a proposed waste water treatment works and an associated outfall pipe. The work followed on from an archaeological assessment by Lancaster University Archaeological Unit (LUAU), subsequently OA North. The investigation consisted of a field-walk survey, a program of shovel test pits, a palaeoenvironmental stratigraphic survey of the adjacent tarn and finally the excavation of a series of evaluation trenches.
