Abstract
During February and March 2011 OA conducted a watching brief during replacement of the Old Abingdon Road railway bridge (NGR: Centred at SP 5167 0372). These works included excavations to facilitate replacement of significant
lengths of the carriageways either side of the old railway bridge which had the potential to expose the causeway, road surfaces and possible culverts associated
with the “Grand Pont”. The depth of impact of the groundworks was such that only 19th and 20th century deposits associated with the construction of the embankments
and approaches for the railway bridge were exposed. No deposits or features predating the railway were encountered.
