Abstract
Oxford Archaeology (OA) carried out a field evaluation at land to the north of Stonehenge Farm, Northmoor, Oxfordshire on behalf of Hanson Aggregates in October 2004. this completed work undertaken in 1988 and 1992, principally in Zone D to the west, but also in Zone C to the south of the proposed development.
The evaluation demonstrated that in Zone C there is late Roman settlement activity, postdating recut boundary ditches. There are north-south running field systems to the west of this activity.
Zone D comprises three fields. On the eastern side of the East Field, there are a number of settlement-type features, with gullies, pits and ditches. These are not present further west within this field.
In the northern field there are two small focii of activity, one around Trenches 107 and 110 consisting of intercutting gullies and pits and one around Trenches 101 and 102 consisting of a large waterhole and some postholes. There is also a more substantial ditch in Trench 114 which may have had an associated bank.
In the western field there were a number of substantial boundary/drainage ditches and a palaeochannel.
