Abstract
Following a request by Sian Bishop of White Young Green Environmental Ltd, Oxford Archaeology North(OAN) (formerly Lancaster University Archaeological Unit), undertook a desk-based assessment and field walk-over survey, in February 2002, of a proposed development area (SJ 708 532) near Crewe, Cheshire. The aim of the work was to inform the archaeological component of an Environmental Impact Assessment.
The assessment examined primary records held within the Cheshire County Record Office, the Cheshire sites and Monuments Record , and the Local Studies Collection in Crewe library. It highlighted numerous indications of archaeological potential, from within the study area, as well as sites in close proximity. In particular, the potential for sub-surface evidence of prehistoric and Roman remains was identified. The field walk-over survey examined the surface survival within the study area, and identified the remains of medieval/post-medieval field systems.
