Abstract
This report presents the results of a detailed study by Lancaster University Archaeological Unit
(LUAU) of the A5 Telford milestones, and followed on from a major survey of the archaeology
associated with the Welsh section of the road. The work is intended to inform the reconstruction and
restoration of milestones and their plates along the course of the A5 through North Wales.
The study used the detailed specifications by Telford in conjunction with a field survey and it was
demonstrated that there was a broad consistency between the stones and the original specification. It
was demonstrated that for many of the milestones, up to 60% of the stone is now below ground.
