Abstract

Over a four day period, during March 1997, the Lancaster University Archaeological Unit
carried out excavations in advance of the laying of a new sewerage system at Vale Royal
Abbey (SJ 6385 6985), Cheshire. The sewerage system is to be laid at the back of Great House,
in the area of the former monastic cloisters, and is within the extent of a scheduled ancient
monument. The work was undertaken on behalf of DHC Ltd and was completed in accordance
with the conditions attached to the Scheduled Monument Consent, obtained prior to the
commencement of refurbishment work at Vale Royal Great House. A total of four trenches was
excavated, along the line of the proposed sewer pipes, between the existing house and the
extant drainage system.
