Abstract

Lancaster University Archaeological Unit (LUAU) undertook a watching brief at 18 Sunnyside Avenue, Ribchester, Lancashire, (NGR SD64823527) on the 20th of June 1998 on behalf of Mrs L Horrigan. The site is situated to the north-west of the Roman fort and about a hundred metres north-west of a defensive punic ditch identified at the sheltered housing development (Olivier 1987). This may define the area of Roman settlement, or may simply have been an internal feature.
The aim of the watching brief was to record any significant archaeological deposits uncovered during the excavation of a series of foundation trenches for a new extension to the north of the existing building. However, no significant archaeological features were recorded during the watching brief, and the only artefacts present were of a modern date.
