Aynhoe Park Archaeological Observation, Investigation and Recording Report

Oxford Archaeology was commissioned by Savills on behalf of James Perkins to
undertake an archaeological watching brief for a kitchen extension and gas
service connection at Aynhoe Park House, Aynho, Northamptonshire. The
watching brief was undertaken between March and May 2021.
The watching brief recorded a stone surface extending beneath the current
driveway and former stable yard. The surface is probably associated with
Soane’s remodeling works in the early-19th century and repositioning of the
main entrance. Drainage related to a later post-medieval water collection
system were observed beneath this surface. Other earlier features include a
possible wall, a pit feature, and a probable trampled surface which are
considered likely to relate to later post-medieval activity. Evidence of 18th
century garden soils was recorded within the northern part of the site.
Apart from a small assemblage of finds retrieved from later deposits, no evidence
of the 17th century house or associated features was observed during
monitoring works.
