Abstract
Oxford Archaeology (OA) was commissioned by Perspectives to undertake an archaeological watching brief during groundworks at the site of a proposed extension to a residential development at Stock Green Farm, Bracewell,
Lancashire (NGR: SD 8682 4898).
The work was undertaken as a condition of scheduled monument consent (SMC: ref. S00243235), as it falls within the scheduled monument of Stock medieval settlement and part of its open field system (SM32843). Discussions with the
Inspector of Ancient Monuments North Region at Historic England identified that an archaeological watching brief was required during any below ground works required. OA were subsequently contacted by the client and were commissioned to produce a written scheme of investigation and undertake the necessary fieldwork during groundworks, which were completed in a single day, 3rd March 2023.
The area excavated was monitored by an archaeologist and no archaeological remains were observed. This is likely due to the shallow nature of the excavation works, only 0.3m deep, and not reaching the natural geology. The ground and
light conditions throughout the fieldwork were favourable; as such, if archaeological remains had been present, they would have been easily identified.
