Abstract

A field evaluation was carried out, by the Oxford Archaeoiogical Unit (OAU) at Frewin Hall, Oxford, on behalf of Brasenose Coilege, in respect of an application
for planning permission for student accommodation and car parking. The site is in the centre of Oxford, at grid reference SP 512062 In the area of trench 1 there were no archaeological deposits due to the construction of a post-medieval cellar. In trench 2 there were undated features cut into the gravel which were overlaid by earty garden or ploughsoils. These were cut by l3th and
14th century features that may date from the use of the site as the centre of an urban manor and which were overlaid by 14th-century garden soils. The wall of
a substantial building was cut into the l4th-century garden soils. The wall had been robbed. There may have been a parallel wall and the traces of a floor. An l8th-century cellar or large stone lined pit was found in the w of the trench.
18th- and 19th-century floor layers and robber trenches are from more recent buildings. There were 19th-century refuse pits cut into the garden soils and the later buildings.
