Abstract

In September 1997 the Oxford Archaeological Unit (OAU) undertook a watching brief at Castle Mill Stream, Paradise street, Oxford (NGR SP 50930612) during refurbishment works tot he weir by Dyer and Butler, Civil Engineering Contractors. Massive foundations of wood, clay and stone were encountered in the sections of the main sluice suggesting the presence of a major structure, possibly the Castle Mill itself, but too little remained to make for definitive inerpretation to be possible. Two of the timbers were felled in the 14th century. Later features on the island between the sluices were examined and the sluice walls recorded.
