Abstract

Between the 15th and the 17th of May 2013 Oxford Archaeology (OA) carried out a
field evaluation within two adjoining fields at land off Station Road, Feniton, Devon
on behalf of CgMs Consulting and in support of planning application 13/0591/FUL.
The evaluation consisted of five trenches which were targeted on geophysical
anomalies. The western parts of the fields had been previously evaluated by AC
Archaeology.
The earliest archaeological evidence comprised a buried soil horizon of early
Roman or pre-Roman date. This layer was cut by features within Trenches 1, 3 and
4. A ditch within Trench 1 contained pottery of mid-late Roman date, and an
enclosure to the south may be of a similar date on grounds of alignment. Other
undated features included enclosure ditches (Trench 2), and field boundaries
(Trenches 3, 4 and 5).
