Abstract
Oxford Archaeology have undertaken a twenty five trench evaluation of land at
Watford Gap in advance of the submission of a planning application. Seven
archaeological features were revealed (including a single ditch recorded in both
Trenches 16 and 17). Of these 4 were clearly related as part of a cultivation system
in Trench 8. Two further ditches were recorded in Trenches 10 and 19. Two of the
ditches are positively dated and interpreted as post medieval field boundaries and
while a small quantity of abraded probably Roman pottery was recovered from one
of the other features they may be medieval or post medieval in origin. Evidence for
ridge and furrow cultivation was also recorded in the southern and eastern areas of
the site.
