Abstract

Oxford Archaeology East was commissioned by Savills to undertake a desk-based assessment of land off Cox's Drove, Fulbourn. The site, which covers approximately 0.56 hectares, has been earmarked for development as part of a housing scheme. The aim of the archaeological assessment was to define the archaeological potential within the study area and will be used to inform the scope of any further archaeological investigations.
The site is on the periphery of the village and although residential growth has occurred around it, the site itself is not thought to have been subject to any form of development. A Neolithic 'handaxe' and a number of worked flints have been collected from fields on the east of Fulbourn and a Bronze Age axehead from a field on the far south side of the village. Later finds include a substantial Iron Age settlement located to the west of site.
Roman remains are the most likely to survive on the site, with the fields to the immediate east known to contain Roman remains, as well as extensive cropmarks and a number earthworks. Medieval activity is confined to the south-east side of Fulbourn where a number of manor houses are believed to have been located.
The site has remained an agricultural field from the medieval period through to modern times when it became a timber yard. This lack of development will have aided the preservation of any buried archaeological remains which may exist within the site.
