Abstract

Between 13th August 2012 and 5th July 2013 Oxford Archaeology carried out an
archaeological watching brief at the site of proposed development at Cantay House,
36 – 39 Park End Street, Oxford on behalf of Cantay Investments Ltd. The watching
brief recorded substantial post-medieval deposits of made ground - probably laid to
raise the area above the level of the water courses to the east and west of the site.
Also encountered were the truncated remains of two stone built walls, possibly
boundary walls from one of the Burgage plots shown of the 1675 Loggan map of
Oxford. A truncated base of a brick-built cellar and a brick-floor dating to the latter
part of the 19th century were also observed.
No evidence for activity pre-dating the post-medieval period was encountered.
