Land at Wilburton Road, Haddenham, Cambridgeshire

Between 15th and 24th September 2014, Oxford Archaeology East (OA East) carried out an archaeological evaluation on Land at Wilburton Road, Haddenham, Cambridgeshire. The area evaluated covered approximately 4.1 hectares and lay within the historic village and fen island of Haddenham. A total of 22 evaluation trenches were opened.
A total of 36 shallow linear furrows were revealed across the site on a north-south alignment and are therefore considered to represent a medieval ridge and furrow field system. Two medieval field boundaries associated with this system were also encountered. An enclosure dating to the Roman period was also revealed towards the north of the site, along with a number of internal pits and ditches. In addition, three outlying ditches dating to the Roman period were found that most likely represented field boundaries. An outlying Roman pit was found to contain preserved spelt wheat. A cow and a dog burial dating to the Bronze Age were also encountered in the southern part of the site.
