Abstract

Beam slots and postholes representing at least two buildings and a series of associated ditches and pits, dated to the Late Saxo-Norman/Early Medieval period, were defined within the excavation area. It is clear from the alignment of features that these remains do not pre-date the construction of the Bishop's enclosure since they are aligned with a property boundary that appears to dates from the post-enclosure layout of the village, but which is different from the alignment of the present day along the Thrapston road. There were no features that appeared to pre-date the Bishop's Palace enclosure.

The ambiguity of the ceramic dating evidence is less clear to the date at which the village underwent its re-development, though Taylor's (1989) suggested twelfth century date still seems most likely.
