Abstract

An archaeological evaluation was carried out by the Archaeological Field Unit of Cambridgeshire County Council at School Lane, Alconbury (TL 186762) prior to residential development of the site. Desk-based assessment indicated the presence of ridge and furrow within the development area as well as a medieval church of St Peter and Paul and medieval field system as well as a post-medieval barn and manor house as well as medieval earthworks nearby. An earthwork survey was also undertaken within the development area to record, classify and locate the remains and identified ridge and furrow, a linear ridge as well as a pond. An aerial photographic survey recognised the fridge and furrow and a modern field boundary. Cartographic study showed a pond or quarry within the development area. Evaluation trenches were excavated to evaluate the pod, platform and adjacent earthworks. The archaeology present within the development area consisted of medieval earthworks indicative of cultivation and the remains of a post-medieval pond.
