Abstract

In June and July OA carried out an archaeological watching brief at St Thomas Church, Elsfield, Oxfordshire. The work was commissioned by Carden and Godfrey Architects for the Church Parish Council in advance of the construction of a new extension on the north side of the church. The watching brief revealed a minimum of ten burials, the earliest of which dated to the early medieval period, with inhumations continuing on the north side of the church until the early 20th century. All human bones excavated have been set aside safely inside the chrch, to be re-interred by the church authorities. Evidence in the form of construction debris was found for the mid-Victorian restoration.
