A40 Witney - Cassington Dualling An Archaeological Evaluation 1991/92

In September 1991 7 January 1992 Oxford Archaeological Unit carried out an evaluation of the proposed route of the A40 Witney-Cassington dualling. The route lies on the Oxford Cheltenham stretch of the A40, approximatley seven miles north-west of Oxford (SP 380100 - SP 470105) this work was funded by English Heritage.

The new route (approximately 9.5km) will follow and widen the existing road line for much of its length but diverges from it north of Eynsham. Part of the diversion lies within a wide cutting. the results of the evaluation was divided into several areas along the route. These indicated tree clearance in the Evenlode floodplain, Iron Age pits at the west end of the route and medieval features at the eastern end of the route as well as Mesolithic and Bronze Age flintwork.
