1 & 2 Howgill Street, Whitehaven, Cumbria. Archaeological desk-Based Assessment, Evaluation and Recording.

Following a proposals by Louise Hetherington (Planning Application 4/04/2611) for a residential development at Numbers 1 and 2 Howgill Street, Whitehaven, Cumbria
(centred NX 9725 1788), Cumbria County Council Historic Environment Service (CCCHES) requested that an initial scheme of archaeological investigation be undertaken to further inform the planning process. This initial programme comprised a desk-based assessment and visual inspection followed by an archaeological evaluation. Following the acceptance of a project design to meet the requirements of
the CCCHES brief for this work, Oxford Archaeology North (OA North) was commissioned to undertake the initial phase of work in June 2005.
The desk-based assessment examined a study area within a radius of approximately 500m of the proposed development site. This revealed a total of 30 sites, most of which related to the post-medieval development of Whitehaven. Two of these sites appeared to be at direct risk from the proposed development: an early eighteenth century bowling green (Site 26) and a mid-eighteenth century row of terraced
buildings known to have been demolished relatively recently (Site 19). The visual inspection indicated the presence of well-preserved standing remains surviving as the
rear boundary of the site.
