Abstract
Oxford Archaeology North (OA North) was invited by the National Trust to conduct an historic landscape survey of lands surrounding Sizergh Castle, Cumbria (SD 4938 8798 approx centre); this was intended to record and evaluate the archaeological and historical features within the 633ha (6.3 sqkm) of pasture, woodland and parkland of the wider estate and inform its future management. This entailed a detailed
documentary study, an identification landscape survey, a boundary survey, a garden survey and a landscape assessment. A combined professional and volunteer approach was implemented from the outset of the project, with volunteers taking part in both the documentary research and the fieldwork.
