Carlton Bank Alum Works, Carlton in Cleveland, North Yorkshire. Excavation Assessment Report

An excavation of the Carlton Bank alum works, Carlton-in-Cleveland, North Yorkshire (NZ
520027), was undertaken by the Lancaster University Archaeological Unit (LUAU) in
advance of a land reclamation scheme to stabilise the spoil tips. This was the third stage of a
multi-phased project which has involved topographic survey, field evaluation (LUAU 1996),
a geophysical survey and geochemical analysis.
The fieldwork involved an initial surface survey of the excavation area and immediate
locality, a series of evaluation trenches which were subsequently incorporated into the extent
of the open area excavation, and then the main mitigation excavation of the site. Following
on from the excavation a watching brief of the landscaping works is being undertaken and
will inform the results of the earlier phases of the work; however, the results of this element is
not incorporated within the present assessment. The fieldwork was carried out in accordance
with the project brief and design, in September 1997, and was monitored throughout by Mr G
Lee (North York Moors National Park Authority). The project was funded by English
Partnerships.
