St Mary and All Saints Church, Great Budworth, Cheshire. Archaeological Excavation Report

In October 1998, a small-scale archaeological excavation was undertaken by Lancaster
University Archaeological Unit (LUAU) at Great Budworth, near Northwich, Cheshire (SJ
6649 7752). As part of Millennium Fund refurbishment of the medieval Church of St Mary
and All Saints, new storm drainage was required.
The Church of St Mary and All Saints is mentioned in the Domesday survey (1086), and
incorporates as its earliest evident features a stone altar and benches of probable thirteenth
century date in the South Chapel. The church has a ground plan typical of the fourteenth
century, although it appears to have been remodelled at sometime in the late fifteenth century.
The western tower dates from the early part of the sixteenth century, at which time
amendments were also made to the main body of the church.
