Abstract

The Oxford Archaeological unit (OAU) undertook a small archaeological evaluation on the site of 53 George Street, Oxford, ât the beginning of March 1995. The work
was carried out in connection with a proposal to build a Wine Lodge and was undertaken as part of a condition attached to planning consent.
The evaluation consisted of a single trial trench, measuring 5m long x 1.5m wide, which was excavated in the NE corner of the site. Wall foundations and a backfilled celìar belonging to a 19th century building which
would have fronted on to George Street were located. Where earlier deposits survived in the south half of the trench, external to the cellar, a small island, of soil containing medieval pottery was locâted, cut away to the south by a deep disturbance, backfilled in the 17th century.
