Abstract
The Reverend Andrew Holliday and the Parochial Church Council (PCC) of St Wilfrid, Standish, commissioned Oxford Archaeology North (OA North) to undertake an archaeological watching brief during ground works associated with the dismantling and rebuilding of the churchyard wall at the Church of St Wilfrid, Standish, Greater Manchester (NGR SD 5631 1026). The current wall delineates the northern boundary of the churchyard, and acts as a retaining wall to the graveyard. The force exerted from the raised level behind the wall, together with a number of mature trees that had been present, was pushing the wall outwards towards the public highway, Rectory Lane, hence the requirement for remedial work to the wall, which included the removal of a 30m section of the existing wall and part excavation of the graveyard behind the wall.
