Morecambe Community Centre, Morecambe, Lancashire. Archaeological Building Investigation.

Christopher Rodgers Ltd, acting on behalf of Glenroyd Developments, made a planning application (Planning Application 05/01038/CU)) to Lancaster City Council
to partially demolish and convert the former Community Education Centre, Poulton Road, Morecambe in Lancashire (SD 4380 6440). As part of the planning procedure, the council consulted Lancashire County Archaeological Service (LCAS), which recommended a building recording programme of English Heritage (2006) Level III standard. This was to include a rapid desk-based assessment, which would provide an
historical background and detail any changes in the development of the building. In addition, an extensive site investigation was to be undertaken, comprising written
descriptions, as well an extensive photographic record, and site drawings of the floor plans and sections.
Following these recommendations, Christopher Rodgers Ltd requested that Oxford Archaeology North (OA North) undertake the building investigation, which was duly completed in July 2006.
The building dates from the Edwardian era and the commemorative plaque unequivocally dates the building to 1912. The survey revealed that in the century since its construction, it has changed little in plan. The alterations made in this time have been unobtrusive and had little impact on the structure itself. Additionally, in keeping with this structural continuity, the building has retained its role as a centre of learning, though its teaching remit may have diversified in later years.
