Abstract
Following a request by Sinclair Knight Merz, Oxford Archaeology North undertook an archaeological assessment of an area of land on either side of the River Mersey, the
eastern half being in Arpley Meadows, to the south-west of Warrington town centre, Cheshire (centred SJ 596 870). The assessment was carried out in advance of the proposed development of the site for retail and residential use, and involved a deskbased assessment and site visit, undertaken in May 2005.
The desk-based assessment involved the examination of a 1km study area centred on the site, including all pertinent documents and cartographic sources held in the Cheshire and Lancashire County Record Offices, and the consultation of the Cheshire Historic Environment Record (HER) in Chester. In addition, several published sources were consulted to provide background information.
