Abstract

Severe erosion has been observed at Top Buttress, the most important, surviving Langdale
Neolithic axe factory group. The National Trust Langdale Advisory committee considered that it
was unwise to proceed with an expensive repair programme before establishing the cause and
extent of the erosion. As a consequence, in August 1992, the Lancaster University
Archaeological Unit was commissioned by English Heritage and the National Trust to undertake
a research programme to establish the factors affecting the ecological equilibrium on Top
Buttress, Great Langdale. Four specialists (R.Evans, D.Higgitt, G.Halliday and J.Hooson) were
approached to undertake ecological assessments of the area. On the basis of one or two site visits
each produced a summary report assessing the cause
