Abstract

Oxford Archaeology was commissioned by XLB Property to undertake Historic
Investigation and Building Recording of Building 6000 in Havant Langstone Technology
Park prior to its demolition. The site recording took place between 13th and 14th of April
2023.
Building 6000 represents an office building designed and built by Arup from 1978-
1981. The design was led by David Thomas, with involvement on the garden courtyard
feature by James Russell. It forms the last building of a wider manufacturing complex
constructed from 1968-81 in Langstone Park, Havant for the computer giant IBM.
Building 6000 was built to replace temporary offices which formerly served the
complex. It is an example of the architectural style known as Brutalism, which was
popular throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s.
The present building closely represents its original use and basic layout, albeit with
some modern rearrangement of the internal partitions. The general layout of the
building, staircases, toilets and even some furniture have been preserved to this day,
which is confirmed by archival photos.
